Do non-profits have PIPEDA obligations? +
Yes. If your organization collects, uses, or discloses personal information in the course of commercial activities — which includes fundraising, membership management, or selling goods/services — PIPEDA applies. This includes donor names, contact details, giving history, and volunteer records. You are responsible for protecting that data and ensuring it is handled lawfully.
Why does it matter where our data is stored? +
If your data is stored on US-based servers — including Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft OneDrive, or Backblaze — it falls under US jurisdiction. Under the CLOUD Act, US authorities can compel American companies to hand over data stored anywhere in the world, without notifying the data owner. For a non-profit handling sensitive donor or client information, this is a real legal exposure. ClientVaultPro stores all data exclusively in Ottawa, Canada — subject only to Canadian law.
What kind of data do non-profits typically back up? +

Contact us and provide your CRA registration number. We verify your status and apply the 15% non-profit discount to your annual plan. The discount applies to Starter and Professional plans only, billed annually upfront. Annual plans are non-refundable once the billing period begins.

Starter suits smaller organizations with up to 3 computers and basic backup needs. Professional suits larger non-profits with multiple workstations and Microsoft 365 — it also includes quarterly restore verification so you can prove your backup actually works, which is valuable for grant reporting and board accountability. We already use Google Drive / Dropbox — isn’t that enough? +
Cloud storage and cloud backup are fundamentally different. Google Drive and Dropbox sync your files — if a personal document, private photo, or critical file is deleted, corrupted, or encrypted by ransomware, that change syncs across every device instantly. There is no recovery point.
There is also a data sovereignty concern. Google and Dropbox are US-based companies, which means your personal documents, private photos, client records, donor data, and organizational files are subject to US jurisdiction and the US CLOUD Act, which allows American authorities to compel access to data regardless of where it is physically stored.
